ALUNA

Aluna originally got her start as one half of the beloved duo AlunaGeorge, achieving international renown with widespread acclaim, award nominations, major collaborations, and massive tours, but it wasn’t until later that she stepped truly into her power with her debut album Renaissance in 2020

via Mad Decent. Co-produced by Aluna alongside executive producer Lido, and featuring contributions from Princess Nokia, Jada Kingdom, SG Lewis, KAYTRANADA, Scott Storch, GRADES,

Mr. Carmack and Rema, Renaissance represented the culmination of her journey of “a black girl in an all-white British suburb back in the day” to launching a rule-breaking revolution where rigid boundaries dissolve between culture, race, gender, and genre. Beyond generating over 100 million

streams, it garnered widespread tastemaker acclaim. Pitchfork noted, “The album showcases her curatorial skills…and her range,” while Clash raved, “Renaissance sees Aluna cementing herself as

one of the most exciting artists around with this iconic offering that will inspire dance records for years to come.” Aluna further cemented herself as one of the most important curators and voices in dance music with her second full-length solo offering, MYCELiUM (Mad Decent) released July, 2023.

NPR said, "With an emphasis on queer and/or Black artists from many different countries, she's built a powerful statement about claiming your power while still leaving space for others." Billboard

observed, "[MYCELiUM] features creative, interconnected work…altogether forming a foundation of diversity that’s the core of Aluna’s mission."

FREEMASONS (Russell Small)

Electronic and dance music from Brighton, England, comes in waves. Following the quiet period that took over electronica in the face of the early 21st century teen pop renaissance, groups like that city's Freemasons stepped in to take on the task of returning the sounds of house and dance to their former heights. Made up of Russell Small and James Wiltshire, and named after a favorite pub in their hometown, Freemasons were quick to establish themselves as a production team, eventually scoring jobs like remixing for Kelly Rowland, Beyoncé, and Solange Knowles.

From their formation as a team in 2005 to their considerable success in 2007, Freemasons released a number of hit singles in the genre, including "Watchin'," "This Time Baby," and "Love Is on My Mind" (all collected on the early 2007 album Shakedown). Their Unmixed album followed at the end of the year. A collection of their remix work to date, it was a hit that was followed by more success in the club circuit, both in the U.K. and the States. It was this early work that led to the attention from Beyoncé, who commissioned the duo to do remix work for her B'Day album.

In 2008, Freemasons scored a Top 30 single in the U.K. with the Katherine Ellis-featuring track "When You Touch Me." A feature for Sophie Ellis-Bextor, "Heartbreak (Make Me a Dancer)," reached the Top 15 in 2009, from their Shakedown 2 album. A remix EP followed in 2010, but there was a four-year wait for Shakedown 3, finally released in September 2014 and including features for Katherine Ellis and Joel Edwards.

HARRY ROMERO

“To make it in 2025, you must be original! Get back to song-writing! And make something that will last more than 5 days. Otherwise we are just painting by numbers and that’s boring.”

In the beginning, jack had a groove. And thanks to heavyweight house heroes like Harry Romero, that groove is now back. “My love of house came from the culture,” explains Jersey’s finest from his studio headquarters in The Butchashop. Harry, in case you missed the musical memo, is a house music legend with classic club cuts like ‘Tania’, ‘Night @ The Black’ and ‘I Go Back’ with Robert Owens under his belt, but really that’s just the tip of the iceberg as his current catalogue will attest. Harry’s 2021 saw releases and remixes on labels from Crosstown Rebels to Hot Creations and Classic Recordings, and 2022 and 2023 saw him release on Defected for the first time since the mighty ‘Revolution’. See, from then to now, Harry represents one thing: and that’s pure quality. His inspirations growing up tell the same story. From the mid to late 80s he listened to Tony Humphreys on the radio and followed Masters At Work, Todd and Fingers Inc.

So, with the full and complete backing of Defected and Classic, it’s now Harry’s time to shine. He released the Kölsch/Pete Tong approved (not to mention the Beatport-trouncing, Afro-House number one) ‘Afro Horn’ on Crosstown Rebels, as well as remixes of ‘Tania’ from Honey Dijon and remixes of his own for Jack Back and CeCe Rogers and Danny Tenaglia. Friends for (club) life, his Danny Tenaglia association with ‘Don’t Turn Your Back’ on Hot Creations was a major success: he remixed alongside Mendo and the mighty Carl Cox. He also found time to chat to Honey Dijon to discuss their incredible respective careers in house and released on Cecille with ‘Mood Vision’, a singular and super-distinctive house instrumental that was supported by Honey Dijon and Luciano alike and was another Beatport success that continues to soar into 2024. With the epic and spiritual sequel to ‘Afro Horn’, ‘It’s You’ having now dropped as well as ‘It Hurts’ on Crosstown, the more eagle-eyed among you will have noticed his name on Honey Dijon’s new artist album. In short, he has become the go-to remixer for house remixes once again and there’s plenty more ahead.

So what’s his ethos now? Simple! To wave his own flag and in 2023 he scored another major hit with a little help from Chris Lake on Black Book. The killer disco cut was a bona fide smash on radio and via streaming and featured vocals from UK songstress Leo Wood: the track was called ‘Fool For Love.’ “I know what I’m capable of in the studio and behind the decks. Harry 2.0, this is my renaissance! “ He’s had a career that now runs across two decades but also recognizes that “this is a rebirth, not a remix.” It’s also about reaching a new generation with a catalogue that speaks for itself. “’Tania’ is still being played by Loco Dice and Luciano. It’s not easy to do something with ‘Tania’, he notes. “Obviously, what Honey Dijon handed in was unbelievable. She knows the original from Danny Tenaglia playing it in the city and she made it harder and tougher while also being something standing on its own.” Make no mistake, 2021 and 2022 may have been a crazy world but we’ve now come out of the dark and Harry’s has steered his way through with skill and dexterity. Releasing the digital House Masters comp with Defected, then, was the cherry on the proverbial cake. With a slew of releases to come on Defected, DFTD and Classic in 2025 (first up ‘Blackout’ and then ‘I Wanna Thank You’ via Glitterbox), not to mention a single or two with the ever-evolving German producer Cinthie, the colour of the future couldn’t look less painting by numbers for Harry: thank goodness for that.

THE ILLUSTRIOUS BLACKS

YoHoMo described The Illustrious Blacks live show perfectly: “Self-proclaimed Afro-Electro-Disco-Space-Punks, The Illustrious Blacks are unlike anything you’ve ever experienced. Part DJ set, part dance performance, part Studio 54, part Berlin underground, this NY couple know how to put on a SHOW!” With inspiration from Prince, Grace Jones, David Bowie and George Clinton, The Illustrious Blacks have a mission to fuse funk, house, techno and disco into their own electrifying and transcendental performances.

As the result of a viral DJ set, The Illustrious Blacks garnered international fame and find themselves touring Asia, Australia, Europe, the UK and Canada, with bookings in iconic venues like Sydney Opera House (House of Mince), Ministry of Sound, Hi Ibiza (Glitterbox) and major music festivals like Roskilde, Splore and Milkshake. Collaborations

include: Seven Davis Jr, remixes by Osunlade, Luke Soloman (Beyonce), Russell Small (Freemasons), Nickodemus, Tedd Patterson, as well as their own solo projects on Defected Records/Classic Music Company. They have expanded

their creativity to music production and remixing including a remix release of Jody Watley’s uplifting song “Everlasting” featuring a version produced by Amara Jaguar and the dynamic duo themselves.

They are also currently working on their debut album of ballroom inspired, cunty house tracks, psychedelic funk

and new breed/honey sweet pop to be released soon..

JOI CARDWELL

Joi Cardwell sang for the pleasure of it before she turned professional and started contributing backing vocals for a list of other artists that includes LL Cool J, the Pointer Sisters, and Jermaine Jackson. A native of New York City, she stepped onto the stage at Carnegie Hall when she was five years old, singing "Three Blind Mice" as part of her school's performance there. Her teen years saw the dream of performing solidify, and she enrolled in New York University as a liberal arts major with a concentration in philosophy and literature. During her time at NYU, she entered a talent competition hosted by Harlem's Apollo Theatre. She earned top prize a total of five times, the first time by belting out "For Your Eyes Only." It wasn't long before she turned professional and started touring with Ben E. King. Producer Kashif tapped her to join a group called the Promise in 1989. The all-girl outfit made one album, but the recording was never released. Within two years, Cardwell quit to strike out on her own. She sang on the dance numbers "Saved My Life" and "Club Lonely" in 1992. During this time she sang backup for others, while her own solo career took her to a string of labels. She put out "Was It Something I Said" for Epic, "Holdin' On" for Freetown Records, and "Hot Little Body" for Tribal America, which also featured Behavior and Fred Jorio. A new career phase started in 1994, when Cardwell signed with Eightball Records, an independent label based in New York. She penned all the songs on The World Is Full of Trouble, her debut album, which she also produced. The 1995 album launched the hit single "Trouble." She went on to score hits with the singles "You Got to Pray," "Run to You," "Jump for Joi," and "Soul to Bare." A self-titled album was released in 1997, followed shortly by the 1998 remix compilation Clubland's Greatest Hits. In 2000, "Last Chance for Love" was honored as the Best Dance Song of the year by the Glama Awards, and she remained active throughout the next several years, with 12" releases on Junior Vasquez Music, Twisted, Curvve, and King Street Sounds. Cardwell is openly gay; she came out of the closet at the age of 21.

TEDD PATTERSON

“Tedd Patterson is a real New York institution, he’s from the dance-floor. A product of the 90's heyday of Sound Factory and SF Bar, you can hear that heritage in his productions and when he plays... In my opinion a real torch bearer for all that is fabulous and legendary about NYC.” - Terry Farley

Upon his arrival in NYC via ATL in the 90’s, Tedd established himself as a rising star in the underground dance music scene. As the In-house record promoter at Emotive Records and then at Liquid Groove, Tedd helped both labels become established as the ones to watch and while doing so, Tedd began his own journey onto the main stage representing House Music worldwide.

After numerous guest spots at some of New York’s most famous clubs like Limelite, Club USA, Tunnel, Save The Robots, and others, Tedd was handpicked by Leslie Doyle for The Magic Sessions alongside all-stars Louie Vega and Tony Humphries. His specific sound made him a pivotal player at the party and exposed him to a worldwide audience. Legions of fans followed as well as the release of “Sessions Twelve (The Magic Sessions)" compilation on Defected Records.

His signature party “Vibal” earned him a 13 year residency at the award-winning club Cielo. Tedd served his loyal fans in New York while making time to headline at some of the worlds best clubs: Ministry Of Sound in London, Panorama Bar in Berlin, Pacha Ibiza, Stereo in Montreal, and he created a massive following in the South of Italy, where he still returns each year.

As a DJ, Producer, and Remixer, Tedd has made equally impactful appearances on celebrated, taste making labels like Defected, Strictly Rhythm, Nervous, Stereo, Junior, Unquantize, and Rekids, to name a few. His collaborations with Pete Heller, Eric Kupper, and Iberian heavyweights Chus & Ceballos have become house classics. Stateside, Tedd is a reoccurring player at Ladyfags’ Battle Hymn party in NYC, often in rotation at Brooklyn's House Of Yes and a few other NY Underground hotspots. He’s a fan favorite when his Horse Meat Disco family comes to town. And is sometimes a featured player at Glitterbox.

“My sets are about fusion,” Tedd explains. “I’m not an old-school soul, classics, or gospel house DJ, I’m adventurous, and my musical repertoire is very diverse. I like the soul that exists in a variety of musical forms. What appeals to me most is the fusion and contrast, that’s most obvious in how I program my sets. I’m not afraid to take a chance and that has become my signature and that works for me.”

“Tedd Patterson is one of my personal heroes. His artistry and passion for music laid the foundation for how I present music to this day.” - DJ Honey Dijon
